How much is it to join the bowl painting party?

It's Free. It's an opportunity to volunteer.

What should I bring with me to paint?

You don't have to bring anything. But, if you prefer your own paint brushes and mixing plate, you're welcome.

Can I buy a bowl which I painted?

Yes, for every 2 bowls you painted, you can choose to buy one for $20 before the empty bowl event.

Bowl making parties In November

Mae Slaton believed that artists should gather together to create and to share. She initiated the Empty Bowls Project in 2006 to celebrate the life and work of Lundin Kudo, ceramic artist and friend. Mae brought together ceramic artists, artists from other media and people who just like to play with clay. All who wished to contribute were welcome. A few “souper” bowls were also selected for a silent auction to raise additional funds to feed the hungry in Martin County.

In honor of Mae Slaton’s commitment to excellence as evidenced by her contributions to the Center for the Arts, Martin County Arts Council Exhibition Committee and Martin County Public Art Advisory Board, this silent auction is now the MAE SLATON SILENT AUCTION OF SOUPER BOWLS.

Mae brought art to every aspect of her life. We hope that these beautiful bowls will fill your life with joy and wonder, while helping to fill humbler bowls with sustenance.

Empty Bowls Day

Empty Bowls Day, Sunday, February 28, 2010 was an absolute blowout success! We had 350 bowls, twice as many as last year and sold almost every single one. We also had twice as much delicious locally donated soup and innumerable baskets of good bread from Publix. And we ran out of everything by noon anyway! Few glitches - line too slow - but all will be addressed next year. We also made twice as much money this year - way over $8,000 for St. Mary's Episcopal Soup Kitchen and the Treasure Coast Food Bank for other Martin County Soup Kitchens! So we are all happy as can be today and looking forward to making more beautiful bowls next year and involving our artists and restaurants and even more of our community in a great project. Well, maybe it was a slow night elsewhere in Martin County, but the Empty Bowls Friday night painting party was hopping. It might have been the best fun in town! It seems many folks had such a good time at our previous painting parties, that they not only came back, but brought spouses and friends. May, Diane, Garth and Ellen worked at fever-pitch to get tables set up, bowls glazed, problems solved and questions answered but it sure was fun. And the bowls...! The bowls produced last night were bright, beautiful, fun and best of all many - a record number. Best of all, we expect to meet or exceed our goal of 250 bowls for the event.

So, painters one and all, thank you. It is truly heart-warming to see how enthusiastically the artists in Martin County (and beyond) have rallied to support the Empty Bowls Project in its efforts to feed hungry

people in our community.

Be sure to stop in at Garden of Goods where finished bowls will be on display until the event. We'll look forward to seeing you all at St. Mary's Episcopal on Sunday, February 28th from 10AM to 2PM. Be sure to get there early for the best selection of bowls, and don't forget, there will be some very special "souper" bowls selected for silent auction.

Pine School young artists

The Mission of the Pine School is to promote academic excellence within a challenging, supportive, and moral environment that fosters the development of mind, body and spirit. The school's Upper School Art Teacher, Maria Miele, agreed to work with The Empty Bowls Project this year to create many beautiful and creative student hand thrown and hand painted bowls. This fulfills their mission and ours at the same time!!!! These bowls will help to form part of the base for our fantastic soup bowl medley, providing artistic beauty for our locals and much needed funding for our soup kitchens across Martin Coutny.!! We are so excited to have these amazing giving and artistic students as a part of our team! All of which benefits the TC Food Bank and St. Mary's Food Kitchen!!! Thank you all so much for choosing to be a part of our team!!

Painting Party in GOG

We have another GREAT day in Garden of Goods. I lost count how many painter has shown up, at one point both tables were packed. I guess over 20. This group of "Barn artists" is fun and very good. We surely would like to have them back next year. In fact, they have so much fun, some already decided to come back on friday night. Ellen, Diane and Garth were working so hard preparing the bowls to keep up with them. All of the works are in the kiln now. We still have about 50 bowls to go on Friday. Scripps News photojournalist - Deborah Silver was here, and great photographer Thomas Winter was here. Tom already has some very nice photos online.

Painting party in Gail McCarthy's studio - Jan. 22

Julia Kelly painted her pair of beautiful love birds in record time. We are joking that we're going to send her to China.
One of Jerry Rose's chair leg collapsed when he's almost done. It's amazing to see his talent in painting and saving the bowl while recovered from the collapse in no time.
You can guess what's Aida Fry (left) working on. But there's a surprise.

Cristina de La Vega, of course, is doing a landscape. You just have to wait to see.

After 2 days of painting party

We had about 25 local painters participate in our first 2 painting parties over the long weekend. Finished bowls are now on display in Garden Of Goods Gallery till the event (Feb. 28). A Tribute to a Friend and the Founder of Empty Bowls Martin County

The friend we knew as Mae Slaton was born Mary Alice Rogan to Helen and Edward Rogan on September 12, 1929 in Bear Creek, Pennsylvania. Mae was the fifth of nine children - Dorothy, Anne, Betsy and Ell and Edward, Joe, Paul and Pat. She attended Kutztown State Teachers’ College, majoring in art, and became an artist who also taught art to many people. She taught for two years in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, where she lived in the home of the editor of the local newspaper. He introduced her to the town’s only eligible bachelor, Chuck Slaton, the Tioga County Agent for the Department of Agriculture, State of Pennsylvania.

Chuck Slaton was already a true WWII war hero. He landed on Normandy Beach on D Day. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was part of the army that protected the French in the liberation of Paris.

The couple eventually married and moved to Harrrisburg where Mae taught at the Lower Paxton Junior High School. Mae took six years off and stayed home to tend her babies when they were born. Tegan, now a Judge in Key West, was born in 1957. Then came Maura in 1959, who followed in her mother’s footsteps, becoming a ceramic artist and an art teacher. Another son, Geary, died at the age of four of brain damage. Speaking of her mother, Maura said, “I never felt anything but loved by her. She was just full of love.”

In 1980 Mae suffered heart failure due to a bout of rheumatic fever as a child. The next year she and Chuck moved to Cape Coral, Florida, where Chuck planted many trees and Mae became a fulltime professional ceramic artist, producing many exquisitely beautiful and useful pieces. Restless, Chuck urged a move to Stuart, Florida, where the couple bought a condominium on Hutchinson Island in 1990. They refurbished the condo and Chuck became president of the Condo Association.

Mae wanted to live on the river but Chuck always loved the forest, so they bought their last home in Palm City, surrounded by native Florida pines and other wonderful trees. Mae began teaching ceramics at the Center of the Arts, where she met many of the artists and dancers who would become some of her dearest friends.

Mae opened her home studio in her garage, with many students in and out through the years. She also served on the Martin County Arts Council Exhibition Committee and the Martin County Art in Public Places Committee for many years. Mae was a natural leader, a born teacher, a fine artist. She had a great and unusual ability to gather people together - a natural magnetism which attracted artists and artisans, those for whom the bond of creativity is essential to life. In her hospice bed, she entertained friends and family with laughter and good spirits until very near the end.

Mae Slaton died October 23, 2009. She had just had her 80th birthday party.

Mae Slaton, always an innovator, was greatly responsible for the establishment of the Empty Bowls Project in Martin County. This project continues this year in her honor and in honor of Lundin Kudo.
